Underwriting Manager (AB500)

Location: London/Hybrid


Role:

The Underwriting Manager serves as a technical leader and subject matter expert, providing specialised underwriting guidance and technical oversight for the underwriting team. This role focuses on maintaining underwriting excellence, developing technical capabilities across the team, and serving as an escalation point for complex risk decisions while ensuring portfolio profitability and growth.


Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary technical referral point for complex, unusual, or high-exposure risks, providing expert guidance on policy interpretation, coverage analysis, and risk assessment.
  • Oversee profitability, growth, and retention of the Technology portfolio by analysing key performance metrics, assessing technical risk, identifying loss trends, recommending underwriting changes, and monitoring exposures for balanced portfolio management.
  • Ensure Practice adheres to Underwriting processes and guidelines through regular review of cases and underwriting, handling and communication.
  • Identifying any necessary corrective actions and providing feedback and coaching to support teams learning and development.
  • Coach, train and lead others by example to ensure the successful execution of the sector strategy, through a focus on Technical Underwriting Knowledge and Sales & Business Development Skills etc. 
  • Analyse sector and product trends to develop and optimise proposition and deliver the best customer outcomes. 
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal regional partners and across the enterprise to support the technical underwriting, profitability and growth of the portfolio. 
  • Foster and maintain relationships with external partners to market and trade products with a goal of writing and retaining accounts consistent with our risk appetite.
  • Must be able to travel to meetings. 
  • Develop and execute individual and practice new business and retention plans that align with sector and regional plans to drive team success.  


Skills/Experience

  • Advanced experience of underwriting, product knowledge, financial analysis, or risk assessment experience within the technology industry. 
  • Thorough knowledge and expertise of sectors, brokers and competitors and customers in the technology industry. 
  • Significant prior experience and track record of external development activity with brokers and insureds.
  • Portfolio Management: Ability to execute strategic direction across assigned portfolio in partnership with leadership.
  • Analytical/Critical thinking: Skilled in underwriting, product marketing, identifying financial issues, and evaluating information to make risk-aligned decisions. 
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to successfully negotiate in difficult situations with brokers.
  • Ability to work with and lead people from different backgrounds etc and experience coaching and mentoring others.
  • Project Management: Lead or support projects involving straightforward business or regulatory changes for product enhancements, maintenance, or launches.
