Development Underwriter – Property & Casualty (AB485)
Location: South West
We are looking for a Development Underwriter to join a home-based team in the South West of England, attached to an office in Birmingham. The role will involve underwrite property and casualty risks; proactively managing the submissions, quotes and binds for new business delivering against targets. Building and maintaining relationships with Brokers to provide insurance solutions to customers, analysing and evaluating risk to achieve business goals.
Responsibilities will include:
- Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of an assigned book of business comprised of routine to moderately complex accounts across products.
- Underwrite and skilfully negotiate moderate risks to minimise risk and maximise profitability, including Mid Term Adjustments (MTAs).
- Proactively manage a portfolio, ensuring KPIs are consistently achieved and you actively target new business and retention.
- Identify and capture opportunities to write additional lines of business using knowledge of products, risk characteristics and appetite.
- Proactively utilise various technology platforms to quote and bind risk efficiently.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and internal teams to identify cross-selling opportunities, present underwriting reviews, and drive new and retained business in line with company risk appetite, including supporting renewal and pipeline plans.
- Mentor and support junior underwriters, providing guidance, training, and handling referrals to aid their development.
Skills/Experience
- Must have good experience/knowledge of underwriting, product knowledge, the regulatory environment, local insurance market, financial analysis, or risk assessment experience.
- Analytical/Critical thinking, with the ability to underwrite, market products, identify financial challenges, and analyse available information to make decisions in alignment with risk appetite.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to successfully negotiate with brokers.
- Ability to undertake industry/competitor analysis and participate in projects that involves analysis and the implementation of non-complex, routine business and regulatory changes.
