Commercial Underwriter – Property & Casualty – New Business - Manchester/Hybrid (RDT168)


Experienced Property & Casualty Underwriter sought to join an expanding Manchester team with a client base which has some of the largest accounts outside of London (which includes Property Owners, Fleet and Construction) and long-standing and close relationships with all the large local independent brokers.


Opportunities exist within the New Business and Existing Business Team, depending on your preference.  The role encompasses many opportunities to contribute to the development and success of the branch account, not just from a growth and profitability perspective but driving service excellence to customers. 


Commercial Underwriter – P&C Role:

  • Underwrite Property & Casualty business profitably, accurately, consistently and in line with established underwriting practices.
  • Build trading relationships with brokers, through visits and large case liaison, to maximise financial results and to generate pipeline new business opportunities.
  • Build a reputation as a trading expert with a panel of intermediaries and build confidence in the branch ability.
  • Identify poorly performing accounts, investigate reasons for lack of retention and implementation agreed actions to increase retention.
  • Contribute to the development of colleagues.
  • Actively encourage generation and retention of profitable business.
  • Produce timely and accurate documentation.


Qualifications/Experience/Attributes for Commercial Underwriter role

  • Dip CII Qualification or working towards ACII qualification.
  • Exposure to the UK General Insurance market is essential, including existing trading relationships specifically across North-West markets.
  • Strong trading capability – commercial awareness and ability to build strong broker relationships.
  • Strong analytical skills with proven experience of account monitoring and action planning.
  • Technical underwriting expertise in a composite insurance environment (non-package).
  • Sound knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements for insurance (including treating customers fairly).
  • Confident decision maker with excellent written and verbal communication skills, negotiation skills and risk assessment and risk management skills.
